Berkeley
Just a quick ride (or BART journey) across the bay from San Francisco, Berkeley is a mecca for fine arts, food, and fun. You can picnic in at the Botanical Garden, explore Tilden Park, or fly kites at the Marina. And of course, Berkeley is home to the world-renowned University of California campus around which much activity is centered. In this vibrant city known for great food, independent bookstores, science and activism, UCB’s Zellerbach Hall is a cultural center, featuring musicians, dance troops, and performance artists. The Berkeley Repertory Theatre downtown offers top-notch theatrical productions, the Freight & Salvage offers an intimate venue for traditional music, and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, designed by the preeminent New York architectural firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, houses a wonderful collection of contemporary art in an architecturally distinguished building. Home to the Cheeseboard, and Chez Panisse, Alice Waters’ restaurant that defined “California Cuisine” and the farm-to-table movement, Berkeley offers numerous unusual eateries and farmers markets. The city’s population is as diverse as its architecture; you’ll see everything from old-fashioned brown-shingle homes to stucco bungalows to lofts in the flats. And don’t forget the hilltop residences with stunning city views!
